Victory Worship Center was born out of New Bethesda Baptist Church, 28 years ago. We are a proud product of the everchanging Bedford Pine Community; where we were conceived out of prayer and spiritual guidance. We spent many prayerful nights in Bible Study in parks under the stars until we were spiritually led to David T. Howard High School Gymnasium by Pastor Kenneth L. Byrd.
It was a cool fall morning on October 10, 1993 that we held our first Sunday Service. It was in the Gymnasium on October 29, 1993 where we held our first Church Conference and organized this great ministry. By vote, we selected our first Church Clerk and Trustee Board. The Choir, Ushers, Nurses and Youth Ministries were formed. Ten Deacons in training were selected by Pastor Byrd. It was at David T. Howard Gym that we welcomed in our first new members, dedicated our first baby and God called home one of our most dedicated Trustees, Mother Eleanor Terrell. Through it all we continued to “walk by faith and not by sight.”
In February of 1994, a persistent Trustee Board moved to finalize negotiations on a Five Year Plus Lease deal with Nations Bank, now known as Bank of America. The lease property negotiated was at 664 Angier Avenue, Atlanta, GA. The lease was signed March 1, 1994. Five months after conducting our first service, on March 6, 1994 the Lord blessed us with our first church home. New Bethesda continued to grow and Pastor Byrd moved on.
In 1997 Seddrick L. Hamner was installed as our second Pastor. Under Pastor Hamner’s leadership many new souls were saved and several more church ministries were formed. (A Women’s Ministry-Sisters in Christ, a Praise Team, a Transportation Ministry and a Tape Ministry.) We began to seek the Lord about a new location to purchase and build upon. A prospective site was located at 2730 and 2748 Flat Shoals Road combined. New Bethesda purchased this combined property in March of 1998. However, due to zoning issues and other difficult challenges, we were unable to move forward. We accepted these challenges as the Lord said “Stand Still”.
After approximately five years and a great deal of growth struggles Pastor Hamner decided to move on. We pressed on for nearly a year without a Pastor. However, the Lord did not bring us that far to leave us, we continued to fast and pray and the Lord blessed us with Pastor Tony D. Roberts. Pastor Roberts was installed April 27, 2002 by Bishop C.L. Carter, Sr. Under Pastor Robert’s leadership at 664 Angier Avenue, our adopted Mission Statement was “Transcending From Hurting To Healing To Victorious Living”. We were able to sell the property located on Flat Shoals Road in March 2004. Prior to selling the property, God had given Pastor Roberts the vision to change our name to Victory Worship Center. We officially made the name change March, 2004.
Growing to upwards of 500 members, in 2006 we were able to purchase the building we currently worship in; 4190 Cedar Ridge Trail, Stone Mountain, GA. It sits on 18 acres and future plans include a Christian Academy and recreation facility. We had our first service November 5, 2006. As our Mission is now “Building People for Kingdom Purposes” we have grown to thirteen ministries. We continue to thank God for each soul saved, each member and our First Family; Pastor Tony D. Roberts, Lady Sonya Roberts, sons Tony roberts Jr., Nicholas Chase and Justin.
